Marie Nevins of Campbell Hall lost her husband, Gerry, to the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. He was a New York City firefighter, assigned to Rescue 1 in Manhattan.

As time passed and Marie Nevins raised their sons, she saw other parents coping with catastrophic losses. She wondered how they endured the pressure of juggling parenting, paying the bills and finding time to grieve. So she and some friends established The Gerry Nevins Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation that helps a recently widowed parent in Rockland or Orange County with dependent children under 21 pay their rent or mortgage for three months. The Nevinses lived in Rockland before they moved to Orange County about 20 years ago.

Marie Nevins estimates that the foundation has distributed more than $125,000 since it was established in 2005.

The Gerry Nevins Foundation is a non-profit organization staffed solely by volunteers, allowing all funds to be distributed to eligible widows and widowers and their families.
